  • Author: Imili Johnson
  • Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 2 oz white rum
  • 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • ½ cup mixed winter berries (cranberries, blackberries, raspberries, or blueberries)
  • 810 fresh mint leaves
  • Soda water (for topping)
  • Ice (crushed or cubed)
  • Lime slices, for garnish
  • Fresh berries, for garnish
  • Mint sprig, for garnish

Instructions

Preparation

Step 1: Start by preparing your glassware. Choose a tall glass or a classic mojito glass for this cocktail. For an added touch, chill the glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes before starting. This step ensures that your drink stays refreshingly cold for longer, enhancing its overall appeal.

Step 2: In the chilled glass, combine the winter berries, fresh mint leaves, and lime juice. Using a muddler or the back of a spoon, gently crush these ingredients together. The goal is to release the natural flavors and aromas of the mint and berries without over-muddling, which can make the mint taste bitter.

Step 3: Add the simple syrup and white rum to the muddled mixture. Stir gently to ensure that all the flavors are evenly distributed. The simple syrup adds sweetness to balance the tartness of the lime and berries, while the rum provides a smooth, boozy base for the cocktail.

Step 4: Fill the glass with crushed or cubed ice. Crushed ice is particularly effective for mojitos, as it helps distribute the flavors throughout the drink and keeps it well-chilled.

Step 5: Top the drink with soda water to add a refreshing fizz. Stir gently once more to mix the ingredients without losing too much carbonation.

Step 6: Garnish your Winter Berry Mojito with a sprig of mint, a lime slice, and a few fresh berries. These garnishes not only add a festive touch but also enhance the drink’s visual appeal, making it perfect for serving at holiday gatherings.

Notes

Freshness is key when it comes to making a great mojito. Use fresh, ripe berries and mint leaves for the best results. Frozen berries can be used in a pinch, but they may slightly dilute the drink as they thaw. Adjust the sweetness of the cocktail by adding more or less simple syrup to suit your personal taste.

When muddling the ingredients, be gentle to avoid crushing the mint leaves too much, as this can release bitter compounds. If you’re short on time, you can prepare the muddled base in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Simply add the soda water and ice when you’re ready to serve.
