Super Bouncy Balls

  • Author: Imili Johnson
  • Total Time: 3-4 hours

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup white school glue (such as Elmer’s glue)
  • 1 tablespoon borax powder
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/4 teaspoon food coloring (optional, for colorful bouncy balls)
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch

Instructions

Preparation:

Step 1: Prepare the Borax Solution

  • In a small bowl, add 1 tablespoon of borax powder to 1/4 cup of warm water.
  • Stir the mixture until the borax is fully dissolved. This will create a borax solution that will help form the structure of the bouncy ball.

Step 2: Mix Glue and Cornstarch

  • In a separate mixing bowl, pour in 1/2 cup of white school glue.
  • Add 1/4 cup of cornstarch to the glue.
  • Stir in 1 tablespoon of water, mixing everything until smooth and well combined.

Step 3: Add Color

  • If you’d like to make your bouncy ball colorful, add a few drops of food coloring to the glue mixture.
  • Stir well to evenly distribute the color throughout the mixture.

Step 4: Combine the Mixtures

  • Slowly pour the borax solution into the glue and cornstarch mixture while stirring.
  • As the two solutions mix, the glue will start to harden and take on a more solid consistency.
  • Continue stirring until the mixture begins to form a semi-solid mass.

Step 5: Knead the Ball

  • Once the mixture starts forming, take it out of the bowl and begin kneading it with your hands.
  • Knead for about 2-3 minutes until the ball becomes smooth and pliable.
  • If the mixture feels too sticky, add a little more cornstarch.
  • If the ball feels too hard or crumbly, add a few drops of water and knead again.

Step 6: Shape the Ball

  • Roll the kneaded mixture into a smooth and round ball shape.
  • Make sure to compact the ball tightly to prevent it from falling apart when bouncing.

Step 7: Let It Dry

  • Allow the bouncy ball to sit and dry for a few hours.
  • Once fully set, it is ready to bounce and play with!

Notes

Even though we use kitchen measurements like tablespoons and cups, this is NOT an edible project. Ensure that children are supervised, and keep all ingredients out of reach of pets and younger children who may try to ingest them.
