Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steak:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 cups sliced mushrooms
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preparation

Step 1:
In a large mixing bowl, add the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper. Using your hands or a spoon, mix the ingredients thoroughly until well combined.

Step 2:
Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty, approximately 3/4 inch thick. These patties will form the base of your Salisbury steak.

Step 3:
In a large skillet, heat a drizzle of oil over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 5-6 minutes per side, until they are nicely browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.

Making the Mushroom Gravy

Step 4:
In the same skillet, add the butter and melt over medium heat. Once melted, add the sliced mushrooms and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the mushrooms are softened and browned.

Step 5:
Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms in the skillet and stir well to coat the mushrooms evenly. Allow the flour to cook for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.

Step 6:
Gradually add the beef broth, whisking constantly to ensure a smooth consistency. Scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet to infuse extra flavor into the gravy.

Step 7:
Add the Worcestershire sauce to the skillet, stirring to combine. Allow the gravy to simmer for 3-5 minutes or until it reaches a thick, smooth consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 8:
Return the Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, nestling them into the mushroom gravy. Spoon the gravy over the patties and let everything simmer together for another 5 minutes to blend flavors thoroughly.

Step 9:
Remove the skillet from the heat and garnish the dish with freshly chopped parsley. Serve the Salisbury steak warm with mashed potatoes or a side of your choice.

Notes

Cooking Note

When forming the Salisbury steak patties, make sure they are not too thin, as this helps them hold up better in the skillet without breaking. Cooking the flour with the mushrooms is essential for achieving a creamy, smooth gravy without lumps or a raw flour taste.
