Ingredients
For the Filling
- 1 lb ribeye steak, thinly sliced (or substitute with deli roast beef)
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
For the Stromboli
- 1 lb pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
Preparation
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
Step 2: Cook the Steak and Veggies
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat.
- Add the thinly sliced steak and cook for 3-4 minutes until browned, then remove it from the skillet and set aside.
- Using the same skillet, add the onion, green bell pepper, and mushrooms (if using). Cook for 5-7 minutes until softened.
- Season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well, then remove from heat.
Step 3: Roll Out the Dough
- On a floured surface, roll out the pizza dough into a rectangle about 10×14 inches. This size allows enough space for filling and folding.
Step 4: Assemble the Stromboli
- Spread the cooked steak evenly down the center of the dough, leaving a 1-inch border on all sides.
- Layer the cooked veggies on top of the steak.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the filling, ensuring each bite is cheesy and flavorful.
Step 5: Fold and Seal
- Fold the sides of the dough over the filling, then fold the top and bottom edges over to fully enclose the stromboli.
- Carefully transfer the stromboli to the prepared baking sheet, placing it seam-side down to help it retain its shape during baking.
Step 6: Brush with Egg Wash
- Brush the top of the stromboli with the beaten egg to give it a beautiful, golden, and shiny crust.
- Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired for added flavor and texture.
Step 7: Bake
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the stromboli is golden brown and the cheese inside has melted and become bubbly.
Step 8: Serve
- Allow the stromboli to cool for about 5 minutes to ensure it slices cleanly. Serve with marinara or cheese sauce for dipping, enhancing the flavor profile.
Notes
Cooking Note
To get the thin steak slices typically used in Philly cheesesteaks, partially freeze the steak for about 20 minutes before slicing. This makes it easier to achieve thin slices, which cook faster and evenly.
