Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 2/3 cups granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips (or your favorite chocolate)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Pan
Line an 8×8-inch square baking dish with parchment paper or lightly grease it with butter. This will make removing and cutting the fudge much easier once it sets.

Step 2: Mix Sugar, Milk, Butter, and Salt
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the 1 2/3 cups of sugar, 2/3 cup evaporated milk, 1 tablespoon butter, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Stir constantly to dissolve the sugar while bringing the mixture to a rolling boil.

Step 3: Cook the Fudge Base
Once the mixture reaches a rolling boil, continue to cook and stir for about 4-5 minutes. The consistency should start to thicken as the mixture bubbles. Keep an eye on it to avoid burning.

Step 4: Add Chocolate Chips and Vanilla
Remove the saucepan from the heat and quickly stir in the 2 cups of semisweet chocolate chips and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Stir the mixture vigorously until the chocolate chips are fully melted and the fudge becomes smooth and creamy.

Step 5: Optional Add-Ins
At this point, you can stir in 1/2 cup of chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts) if you want a bit of texture in your fudge. Feel free to customize this step with other mix-ins like marshmallows or dried fruit.

Step 6: Pour and Set
Pour the fudge mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly with a spatula. Allow the fudge to cool and set at room temperature for 1-2 hours, or you can refrigerate it to speed up the process.

Step 7: Cut and Serve
Once the fudge has completely set, lift it out of the pan using the parchment paper or simply cut it directly in the dish into squares. Enjoy your rich and creamy 5-minute fudge!

Notes

Cooking Notes:

  • Evaporated Milk: Make sure to use evaporated milk, not condensed milk. They have different consistencies and sugar content, which will affect the texture of your fudge.
  • Cooking Time: Be careful not to overcook the fudge mixture. If cooked too long, the fudge can become grainy instead of smooth and creamy.
  • Storage: Store the fudge in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, or refrigerate it for longer storage.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve this fudge as a delightful after-dinner treat with a cup of coffee or hot cocoa.
  • Pair it with vanilla ice cream for an indulgent dessert experience.
  • It makes a great gift! Wrap pieces of fudge in wax paper or place them in a decorative tin for holiday gifting.

Tips:

  • Add Flavor Variations: You can add a variety of flavor extracts to give your fudge a unique twist—try peppermint extract for a festive holiday version or almond extract for a nutty flavor.
  • Toppings: After spreading the fudge in the pan, sprinkle it with sea salt, crushed candy canes, or even sprinkles for added texture and flavor.
  • Microwave Method: If you’re in a rush, you can melt the ingredients together in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring every 30 seconds until fully combined and smooth.
