Scale
Ingredients:
For the Pudding Layer:
- 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 (3.4 oz) box instant vanilla pudding mix
- 1 (3.4 oz) box instant chocolate pudding mix
- 3 cups cold milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 (8 oz) container whipped topping (like Cool Whip), thawed
For the “Dirt” Layer:
- 1 family-sized package Oreo cookies (about 36 Oreos), crushed
Topping (optional):
- Gummy worms or candy bugs
- Fresh mint leaves (for a “planted” look)
Instructions
Preparation:
1: Make the Cream Cheese Mixture
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, butter, and powdered sugar until smooth and creamy.
2: Prepare the Pudding Mixture
- In a separate bowl, combine the vanilla and chocolate pudding mixes with the cold milk. Whisk for about 2 minutes, or until the pudding begins to thicken.
- Add the vanilla extract and fold in the whipped topping until smooth.
3: Combine the Cream Cheese and Pudding Mixtures
- Gently fold the cream cheese mixture into the pudding mixture until well combined and smooth.
4: Assemble the Dirt Cake Layers
- In a 9×13-inch dish or a large trifle bowl, layer half of the crushed Oreos on the bottom to form the “dirt.”
- Spread half of the pudding mixture over the Oreo layer, then add another layer of crushed Oreos on top.
- Spread the remaining pudding mixture, followed by a final layer of crushed Oreos on top to complete the “dirt” look.
5: Add the Toppings
- Decorate the top layer of Oreos with gummy worms, candy bugs, or fresh mint leaves to resemble plants growing in the “soil.”
6: Chill and Serve
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or overnight) to allow the flavors to meld. Serve chilled and enjoy the layers of creamy filling and crunchy cookies!
Notes
- Chill time is important: Letting the dirt cake chill for at least 2 hours allows the flavors to blend and the layers to set, making it easier to slice and serve.
- Crush the Oreos thoroughly: For a realistic “dirt” look, crush the Oreos into fine crumbs. You can do this by placing them in a food processor or using a rolling pin with the cookies in a resealable plastic bag.
- Adjust the sweetness: If you prefer a less sweet dessert, you can reduce the amount of powdered sugar in the cream cheese mixture.
