Ingredients
Scale
- 4 small onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Onions
- Peel the onions and trim the root end slightly so they can sit flat, but keep the root intact to hold the onion together.
- Cut the onion into quarters or 8-10 segments, depending on how “bloomed” you want them, without slicing all the way through the root. Gently spread the onion petals apart.
Step 2: Make the Seasoned Flour Mixture
- In a large bowl, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well. This seasoning blend will add flavor and help create that crispy coating.
Step 3: Prepare the Egg Wash
- In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk until smooth. The buttermilk adds a tangy taste and helps the flour coating stick to the onion.
Step 4: Coat the Onions
- Dip each onion into the flour mixture, making sure the petals are well-coated. Shake off any excess.
- Next, dip the onion into the buttermilk mixture, ensuring it’s coated evenly inside and out.
- Return the onion to the flour mixture for a second coat to get it extra crispy.
Step 5: Preheat the Air Fryer
- Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes. This ensures the onions cook evenly and become golden brown.
Step 6: Air Fry the Blooming Onions
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the coated onions in the basket, leaving space between them so they can crisp properly.
- Spray the onions lightly with more cooking spray to help with browning.
- Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 12-15 minutes, or until the onions are golden and crispy. Flip halfway through for even cooking if necessary.
