  • Author: Imili Johnson

Description

This Honey Garlic Shrimp, Sausage & Broccoli recipe is ideal for busy weeknights when you need something quick, flavorful, and satisfying. The shrimp are tender and juicy, the sausage adds a smoky richness, and the broccoli gives the dish a nutritious, crunchy element. But the real star is the honey garlic sauce—it’s sweet, savory, and just a little spicy, bringing all the ingredients together in a caramelized, sticky glaze. Made in just one pan, it’s also incredibly easy to prepare and even easier to clean up.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 8 oz smoked sausage, sliced into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 cups broccoli florets, fresh or frozen
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional for a bit of heat)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (optional for a tangy finish)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

Start by prepping all your ingredients. Peel and devein the shrimp if not already done. Slice the smoked sausage into thin rounds. Cut the broccoli into bite-sized florets, and mince the garlic. This ensures you can move quickly once you start cooking.

Step 2: Cook the Sausage and Broccoli

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the sliced sausage. Cook for about 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sausage slices are browned and slightly crispy on the edges. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside.

In the same skillet, add the broccoli florets and sauté for 3-4 minutes until they turn bright green and are just tender but still crisp. Remove the broccoli from the skillet and set it aside with the sausage.

Step 3: Cook the Shrimp

Using the same skillet, add the shrimp. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until the shrimp turn pink and opaque. Be careful not to overcook the shrimp as they can become tough. Once done, remove them from the skillet and set aside with the sausage and broccoli.

Step 4: Make the Honey Garlic Sauce

Reduce the heat to medium, and add the butter to the skillet. Once melted, add the minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to let it burn.

Next, stir in the honey, soy sauce, and red pepper flakes (if using). Let the sauce simmer for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will begin to thicken and take on a glossy texture, which is perfect for coating the shrimp, sausage, and broccoli.

Step 5: Combine and Serve

Return the shrimp, sausage, and broccoli to the skillet. Toss everything together until well coated in the honey garlic sauce. Cook for another 2 minutes to heat everything through and allow the flavors to meld together.

If desired, add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for a bright, tangy flavor to balance the sweetness of the honey.

Step 6: Garnish and Serve

Serve your Honey Garlic Shrimp, Sausage & Broccoli hot. This dish is delicious over steamed rice, quinoa, or noodles. You can also serve it on its own for a low-carb option. Garnish with chopped green onions or sesame seeds for added texture and visual appeal.

Notes

Cooking Notes:

  • Shrimp: Fresh or frozen shrimp can be used. If using frozen, make sure to thaw them thoroughly and pat dry to prevent excess moisture when cooking.
  • Broccoli: Fresh broccoli provides the best crunch, but frozen broccoli works too. If using frozen, cook a little longer to ensure tenderness.
  • Sausage: Smoked sausage brings a rich, savory flavor. You can use any variety, such as turkey sausage, kielbasa, or andouille for a spicier kick.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Main Dish: Serve this dish over a bed of steamed rice, quinoa, or your favorite type of noodles. The grains will soak up the honey garlic sauce, adding even more flavor to every bite.
  • Low-Carb Option: For a low-carb meal, enjoy the shrimp, sausage, and broccoli on its own or over cauliflower rice. The bold flavors of the dish are satisfying even without carbs.

Tips for Making the Best Honey Garlic Shrimp, Sausage & Broccoli:

  1. Use Fresh Shrimp: Fresh shrimp will give the best texture and flavor, but frozen works too. Just make sure to pat them dry before cooking to avoid excess moisture.
  2. Don’t Overcook Shrimp: Shrimp cook quickly and can turn rubbery if left on the heat too long. Watch for when they turn pink and opaque, then remove them promptly.
  3. Adjust Sweetness: The honey garlic sauce strikes a balance between sweet and savory. You can add more or less honey depending on your personal taste.
  4. Extra Vegetables: Add more vegetables like bell peppers, snap peas, or carrots to make the dish even more colorful and nutritious.

Variations and Substitutions:

  • Spicy Honey Garlic: For a spicier dish, add more red pepper flakes or a splash of sriracha to the sauce.
  • Add More Vegetables: If you want to pack in more nutrition, add vegetables like carrots, snap peas, or bell peppers to the mix.
  • Vegetarian Version: Replace the shrimp and sausage with tofu or tempeh for a vegetarian version of this dish. The honey garlic sauce will still give you all the sweet-savory flavors.
