DIY Homemade Rainbow Bouncy Balls made with glue, borax, and food colouring, arranged on a colourful surface.

Homemade Rainbow Bouncy Balls

  • Author: Imili Johnson
  • Total Time: 30–40 minutes for full rainbow set

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients (Makes 2–3 medium-sized bouncy balls)

Core Ingredients:

  • ½ cup (125 ml) warm water
  • 1 tbsp borax powder (available in the laundry aisle or online)
  • 2 tbsp white school glue (such as Elmer’s or PVA craft glue)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (cornflour)

Colour & Equipment:

  • Food colouring or gel dye (rainbow colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
  • Small plastic cups or bowls (1 per colour)
  • Wooden stirrers or plastic spoons (1 per colour)
  • Gloves and apron (optional for easier cleanup)
  • Ziplock bags or small containers for storing bouncy balls

Instructions

Preparation:

1: Make the Borax Solution (Activator)

  1. In a small bowl or jug, combine ½ cup warm water and 1 tbsp borax powder.
  2. Stir with a spoon until the borax is completely dissolved.
  3. Set this activator solution aside. You’ll be using a portion of it in each colour batch.

2: Set Up Your Rainbow Colours

  1. Arrange 6 small plastic cups or bowls, one for each rainbow colour (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple).
  2. In each cup, add:
    • 2 tbsp white glue
    • 1 tbsp cornstarch
    • A few drops of food colouring or gel dye
  3. Stir gently with a separate spoon or stick for each colour until smooth and evenly coloured.

3: Add the Borax Solution

  1. Add 1 tbsp of borax solution into the first colour mixture.
  2. Stir immediately — you’ll see the mixture begin to solidify and thicken into a putty-like texture.
  3. Once it clumps together, pick it up and knead it with your hands.
    • It may feel sticky at first, but after 1–2 minutes of kneading, it becomes smooth and bouncy.
  4. Repeat this process for each remaining colour.

4: Shape Your Rainbow Bouncy Balls

  1. Once each coloured batch is ready, you can:
    • Roll them into individual bouncy balls for a rainbow collection
    • Combine small pieces of each colour to make swirled rainbow bouncy balls
  2. Press and roll between your palms until smooth and round.
  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Mixing & Kneading Time: 5 minutes per colour
