Garlic Butter Crab Legs

  • Author: Imili Johnson
  • Total Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs crab legs, split (King or Snow crab work best)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced finely
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (plus extra lemon wedges for serving)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped finely
  • Salt, to taste
  • Optional sides: crusty bread, a side salad, or baked potatoes.

Instructions

Preparation:

Step 1: Prepare the Garlic Butter
  • Begin by melting ½ cup of unsalted butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Be sure to melt the butter slowly to avoid browning.
  • Once the butter has fully melted, add 4 cloves of finely minced garlic. Stir the garlic into the butter and let it cook for about 2-3 minutes, or until the garlic becomes fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic, as it can turn bitter.
  • After the garlic has released its aroma, stir in 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Mix everything well and then turn off the heat. Set aside the garlic butter for later use.
Step 2: Prepare the Crab Legs
  • If your crab legs are frozen, thaw them completely by placing them in the refrigerator overnight or under cold running water for about 30 minutes.
  • Once thawed, split the crab legs in half if they aren’t already. This will allow the garlic butter to seep into the meat, enhancing the flavors.
  • To cook the crab legs, you can either steam or boil them. For steaming: Place the crab legs in a large steamer basket over boiling water. Cover and steam for 5-7 minutes until the crab is thoroughly heated. For boiling: Fill a large pot with water, add a pinch of salt, and bring it to a boil. Submerge the crab legs and boil for 4-5 minutes.
Step 3: Coat Crab Legs with Garlic Butter
  • Once the crab legs are cooked and heated through, remove them from the pot or steamer. Transfer them to a large platter or serving dish.
  • Generously brush the prepared garlic butter over the crab legs, ensuring that each piece is thoroughly coated. The butter should drip into the cracks and flavor the tender crab meat.
Step 4: Garnish and Serve
  • Before serving, sprinkle the freshly chopped parsley over the garlic-buttered crab legs for a pop of color and added freshness.
  • Serve the crab legs with lemon wedges on the side. The lemon juice adds a nice tanginess that complements the richness of the garlic butter.
Step 5: Serve with Sides
  • Pair your garlic butter crab legs with crusty bread, allowing you to soak up any remaining butter sauce on the plate. You can also serve them with a fresh garden salad or baked potatoes for a more substantial meal.

Notes

Cooking Note:

  • Crab legs are already cooked when you purchase them, so the goal during steaming or boiling is to simply heat them through. Overcooking can lead to dry, rubbery meat. Be sure to watch your cooking time closely.
  • Feel free to add extra garlic if you love a stronger garlic flavor or even throw in a dash of red pepper flakes for a subtle heat.
