Galaxy Candy Apples Recipe

  • Author: Imili Johnson
  • Total Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 4 wooden sticks or lollipop sticks
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Black, purple, and blue gel food coloring
  • White food coloring or white edible paint
  • Edible glitter or shimmer dust (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, for flavoring)
  • Candy thermometer
  • A small clean paintbrush (for painting stars)

Instructions

Prepare the Apples:

Step 1: Wash and thoroughly dry the apples. Remove the stems and carefully insert the sticks into the tops of the apples, ensuring they are secure.

Prepare the Candy Coating:

Step 2: In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, and water. Place over medium-high heat and stir continuously until the sugar has dissolved. Allow the mixture to boil without stirring until it reaches 300°F (hard crack stage), as confirmed by a candy thermometer.

Add the Colors:

Step 3: Prepare separate bowls with black, purple, and blue food coloring. Once the candy mixture reaches 300°F, remove from the heat, stir in the black food coloring, and quickly dip the apples, coating them evenly. Place the coated apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet to cool.

Create the Galaxy Effect:

Step 4: After the black base has set, use purple and blue candy melts to drizzle over the apples in swirling patterns. For added sparkle, sprinkle with edible glitter or shimmer dust.

Paint the Stars:

Step 5: Dip a clean paintbrush in white food coloring or edible paint. Flick the brush over the apples to create small stars. Add larger painted swirls to mimic a nebula effect for a more dramatic galaxy appearance.

Set and Serve:

Step 6: Allow the apples to set and harden for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Variation

Try different color combinations or use metallic food colors for a different kind of cosmic effect.

Notes

The temperature of the candy mixture is crucial; ensure it reaches the hard crack stage to prevent the coating from being too soft.

Serving Suggestions:

These galaxy candy apples are a show-stopping addition to any dessert table, especially for space-themed parties or Halloween.

Tips:

  • Handle hot sugar with extreme caution, and ensure that children are kept at a safe distance during the cooking process.
  • If desired, flavor the candy coating with vanilla or your choice of fruit extracts to enhance the taste.
