  • Author: Imili Johnson
  • Total Time: Approx. 20 minutes

Ingredients

Scale

ngredients (Makes 1 medium batch — ideal for 2–4 kids)

  • 1 cup (150 g) all-purpose (plain) flour
  • ½ cup (125 g) salt
  • 1 tbsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (or melted coconut oil)
  • 1 cup (250 mL) water
  • 1 cup fresh dandelion petals (washed and dried)
  • Optional: A few drops of lemon essential oil or vanilla extract (for scent)
  • Optional: Natural yellow food colouring (for stronger colour)

Instructions

Step-by-Step Preparation

1: Gather Your Dandelions

  1. Pick about 1 cup of fresh dandelion flowers from a clean, pesticide-free area.
  2. Rinse the flowers gently in cool water to remove dirt or insects.
  3. Pat dry with a clean towel.
  4. Carefully pull the yellow petals away from the green bases — you only want the petals for this dough.

Tip: The fresher and brighter the petals, the more beautiful the final dough colour will be!

2: Prepare the Dry Ingredients

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together:
    • 1 cup flour
    • ½ cup salt
    • 1 tbsp cream of tartar
  2. Stir in the fresh dandelion petals, distributing them evenly through the dry mix.

3: Mix the Wet Ingredients

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine:
    • 1 cup water
    • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (or melted coconut oil)
  2. Optional: Add a few drops of lemon essential oil or vanilla extract for a delightful scent.
  3. Optional: Add a few drops of natural yellow food colouring if you want a stronger golden hue.

4: Combine and Cook

  1. Gradually add the dry mixture into the saucepan with the wet ingredients.
  2. Stir constantly over low to medium heat.
  3. As you stir, the dough will start to thicken and clump together.
  4. Keep stirring until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.

5: Cool and Knead

  1. Transfer the warm dough onto a clean surface.
  2. Allow to cool slightly until comfortable to handle.
  3. Knead the dough for 3–5 minutes until it becomes smooth, soft, and elastic.
  4. If it feels sticky, sprinkle with a little extra flour during kneading.
