Cajun Chicken Sloppy Joes

  • Author: Imili Johnson
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 1x

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground chicken

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1/2 onion, finely diced

  • 1 bell pepper (any color), finely diced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp Cajun seasoning

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 1/4 cup chicken broth

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

  • 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

  • 4 burger buns, toasted

Instructions

Preparation:

Step 1: Sauté the Veggies

In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat.
Once the oil shimmers, add the finely diced onion and bell pepper. Stir frequently, sautéing until the vegetables soften and the onions turn translucent—this should take about 3 to 4 minutes.
Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, stirring constantly to release its aromatic flavor without burning.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Chicken

Increase the heat slightly to medium-high and add the ground chicken to the skillet.
Using a wooden spoon or spatula, break the chicken into small crumbles as it cooks.
Season the meat with 1 tablespoon of Cajun seasoning, and adjust with salt and pepper to taste.
Cook until the chicken is fully browned and no longer pink, approximately 5 to 7 minutes.
Ensure the chicken is evenly cooked and well combined with the sautéed vegetables.

Step 3: Add Broth and Cream

Reduce the heat back to medium.
Pour in the 1/4 cup chicken broth and 1/4 cup heavy cream, stirring to deglaze the skillet and incorporate all the flavorful bits stuck to the bottom.
Allow the mixture to simmer gently for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce slightly thickens.
The broth deepens the savory flavors while the cream provides a luxurious richness that balances the Cajun spice.

Step 4: Melt the Cheeses

Sprinkle in the 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese and 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese.
Stir the mixture thoroughly, allowing the cheeses to melt into the creamy sauce, creating a luscious, gooey texture.
Ensure everything is evenly coated with the cheesy sauce and that no lumps remain.

Step 5: Assemble the Sloppy Joes

Lightly toast the burger buns for extra texture and durability.
Generously spoon the Cajun chicken mixture onto the bottom halves of each bun.
Top with the other half of the bun, pressing down gently.
Serve immediately while hot and melty, enjoying the full, bold flavor of each delicious bite.

Notes

Cooking Note:

  • Stir the chicken constantly while browning to prevent large chunks from forming.

  • Be careful not to overcook after adding the cream, as boiling may cause the sauce to separate.

  • Toasting the buns is important because it helps them hold up better against the saucy filling.
